Recoloring Sigs & Sugimori

By Crimson Fox

Setup: Find a picture you want to recolor.

This is what I'm recoloring:

Getting Ready: Know what you are recoloring, make as many layers as sections you will use for certain colors plus one. Make sure your eraser tool is set on the normal eraser, and the mode is set on brush.

Here's how I'm recoloring this picture:

Bonsly:
yellow= blue-green
green= violet-red
brown= blue

Diddy Kong:
yellow= blue
red= yellow
brown= white, silver

Explanation: So with this picture, I will have 7 layers total, the extra layer on the bottom allows you to keep original colors as you're not going to recolor everything, like the eyes and mouth. Start with a color that appears least in the picture, in this case I have two figures in the pic, I'll start off with Bonsly. Now to start recoloring go to Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation. Be sure that Preview is on so you can get the color you want. Click on Colorize so that you can adjust to top-most to the color you want. Hue for the color you want, Saturation for how colorful the color is, and Lightness for how light or dark your color is. Once your color is set you then have to erase the extra parts with your eraser tool. At times you might want add a black or white layer to see if you got everything. Once you finished select the next layer below. Repeat from Image Adjustments till you finish the 2nd layer. After checking your look one more time, erasing anything extra you missed, go to Layer>Merge Visible and you have your pic. Save it as a PNG and show it to everyone.

Examples:

What your topmost layer should look like; from there you start erasing.

When repeating the process, your work should start to look like this. Notice how the other colors stand above the silver color, that is because they are a layer above the rest.

The finished work. You don't have recolor every part of the picture, just what you want.
